Announcements

January brings us mid-way through our year already! We will be completing mid-year assessments this month. We will also begin studying animals and Martin Luther King, Jr. We will strengthen our teen number skills before moving on to larger numbers. Be sure to have your child continue practicing the high frequency words and letters that we have covered so far. Before long we will be adding two high frequency words/week, and it is very important to have your child read them daily at home. This takes very little time to do, but is very important to help your child be able to recall these high frequency words.

High Frequency Words

High Frequency Words will be posted on this page throughout the year when we cover them. You will also receive a "fridge sheet" each week with our word(s) of the week and the letter(s) of the week. For each word, children need to be able to recognize and say the word automatically. Children need to recognize the letter, state the letter, and state the sound the letter makes. When we do vowels, children need to know the short sound the letter makes, but we do talk about the long sound, as well. Remember to review past words and letters that have been covered.

I, can, we, the, a, like, to, go, see

Children should also be able to read the color words: red, blue, yellow, green, purple, brown, black, and orange.

Homework

Your child will occasionally have a small task to complete for homework, such as finding pictures for color posters, reading emergent readers that are sent home, etc. You will find information on homework in your child's BEE book, often in the Kindergarten News that comes home at the end of each week.

We will learn sight words and letters weekly. You will receive a "fridge sheet" weekly to hang on your refrigerator and review with your child. It will have our letter and word of the week. It is very important that you practice the sight words we practice in school, which I will keep you up to date with in our newsletter, this website, and the "fridge sheet". Also, whenever your child brings something home to read, please be sure to listen to them read their story.

You can always work on basic math skills with your child, such as counting, simple addition and subtraction concepts, calendar skills, and patterns. You will receive a parent page when we start each new topic - which includes vocabulary, ideas, and games to concentrate on our unit of study.

Also, in addition to materials your child may bring home to read to you, it is critical that you read to your child every day.

The extra practice at home reinforces what we are working on at school and gives your child extra practice, and ultimately, builds your child's knowledge and confidence. Having two young children myself, I understand how busy life is. But please take the time to help your child with any homework. It can also build lifelong accountability and responsibility in their learning.

About The Teacher

Jennifer Mann

 My email: [email protected]
My husband, Chuck, and I have lived in the area all our lives. Our son is going into 6th grade and our daughter is going into 3rd grade. We have a dog named Brody (born 1 day after my daughter!) Our children also have fish and a guinea pig. I began my teaching career in Laurens in sixth grade for half a year, taught for six years in 4th and 3rd grades, but I am excited to be teaching kindergarten for my 5th year!

I graduated from SUNY Oneonta with my Bachelor's Degree in elementary education. I earned my Master's Degree in Literacy from Walden University. I am also a graduate of Laurens Central School. When I attended school at Laurens, I played soccer, played the alto saxophone in band, sang in the chorus, and I was involved in various clubs.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my son, daughter, and husband. We enjoy camping, sports, and our families!

 Mission For The Class

Because we all have different strengths and weaknesses, we will experience a variety of learning styles. These learning experiences will build on our strengths and develop our weaker areas. I expect you to always try your best and be kind to yourself, classmates, and adults so that we can learn together in a fun, positive environment! We will each show our own progress by cooperating and working together! Printable Version

Book Orders

Most months you will receive Scholastic book orders for your child. If you would like to place an order, please be sure your child's name is on the order form, check off the books you'd like, then include the order form with payment in a labeled envelope. You should write a check to Scholastic. (If there is more than one book order you'd like to order from, you may write one check for both). Please watch for information with the first book order if you would like to place your order online.
