Description:
In In this course we will explore the four categories that make-up the
acronym
STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
Science and Math provide the groundwork. Time in this class will be
spent understanding how the topics from your science and math classes are
applied to the fields of technology and engineering.
Technology includes all the tools we use during the design and
building of the projects in this class. From the nuts and bolts of an airplane,
to the microprocessor in your cell phone, all of these objects are pieces of
technology. Knowing how these pieces work, and how to use them properly are
crucial to following the Engineering Design Process.
Engineering is the design and building process we use to address
problems in the world around us. Whether it is sharpening a pencil, or solving
the world’s energy crisis, an Engineer applies a similar procedure to tackle
these problems.
Goals:
1. Students will become active
members in the STEM ccommunity
2. Students will utilize the
concepts they have learned to build a stronger understanding of the Engineering
Design Process within the classroom and in the real world
3. Students will conduct
research and apply critical thinking skills to improve their design models
Course Topic Outline (Time spent, and order of
topics may vary)
- Engineering Design
Process
- Computer Hardware
- Computer Software, and
Computer Programing
- Robotics
- Real World Science
- Alternative Energy
Sources
- Civil and Mechanical
Engineering
Resources:
Students
will be able to use all of the resources
available in the classroom to complete projects. Students are encouraged to
apply topics and materials from previously taught units to the current
projects. Students will be able to use the computers available in the classroom
to research and design each project. Proper use of resources available is
crucial, and improper use can lead to disciplinary action and/or loss of
privileges.
Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated on the following:
Assessments 80%
Assignments 20%
- Homework
- Classwork
- Active Participation
Examination Preparation
Students will be made aware of exams and quizzes
AT LEAST 2 school days before the scheduled date of the examination. There will
be no pop quizzes or tests. Adequate time will be spent in class to prepare for
exams.
Homework
Homework
will be assigned modestly. In most cases it will be a way to connect the
content in class with experiences in your life outside of this class. The goal
of this class is to expand the way in which you see content from school and how
it relates to your everyday life. With this in mind if you ever feel
overwhelmed by your out of class responsibilities, please feel free to speak to
the teacher.
Participation and Classwork
This
class will employ a hands-on approach, which means participation is required.
You will receive a daily participation/classwork grade. This is an easy way to
boost your grade; as long as you are working towards the current objective, you
will receive full credit on this “assignment” each day.
Classroom Expectations
Please follow the school code of conduct. The
goal of this classroom is to create a learning environment where students can
learn and explore a variety of technology and tools available. Some of these
tools can be dangerous if not handled appropriately. If you cannot control
yourself in the classroom you will not use the tools.
Cell phones are one of the most advanced and
useful technology tools we have available to us. When used properly they can be
extremely helpful in this class. You may keep them in your pocket or face down
on your desk. Additionally, you may use them when appropriate. This access is a
privilege and may be taken away at any time.
As per school policy, students are required to
sign out, and have a pass when leaving the room during class periods.
In case of an emergency or emergency drill be
quiet and listen to the teacher for further directions
